- Begin on a Monday morning, or on Purnima or Mahashivratri, after bathing.
- Dip it in clean water or Gangajal for a few minutes, wipe it dry with a soft cloth, and offer it before Lord Shiva with a diya, flowers and sandalwood paste.
- Chant the mantra above 108 times, then wear it with devotion.
- Take it off before bathing with soap or swimming, keep it clean and dry, and now and then apply a few drops of sandalwood oil so the beads do not dry out.
